Iowa State University recently featured Central High alumna, Jocelyn Jackson, in an article about Iowa State’s chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). Jocelyn is a graduate student in mechanical engineering and chair of NSBE’s Region V that includes 53 universities in the central United States. NSBE is one of the largest student-governed organizations in the country, consisting of 394 chapters and over 30,000 members, promoting development and retention of all students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) related fields. One hundred twenty-five Davenport students from Smart, Sudlow, Walcott, Williams, and Wood Intermediate were selected by their teachers on the basis of abilities, merit, and need for accelerations/achievement in vocal music for the 2018 Southeast Iowa Honor Choir to be held at Assumption High at 7:00 p. On January 27th, students from Iowa and Illinois participated in a portfolio review and hands-on workshop at the first Annual Davenport Art Portfolio Day hosted at West High. Students traveled up to 215 miles to participate in portfolio reviews from ten colleges and live Google Hangouts with current college students around the Midwest. Featured professional artist, Rose Frantzen, talked about her growth to success and eventually having her own gallery as well as provided the students feedback on their work in a small setting. In the afternoon, students attended hands-on clinics in various topics, including on building a resume and digital portfolio, Art All-State applications, and AP Studio Art scores. The Mayor’s Office selected three West High students to feature at a recent City Council meeting. Alicia Long and Ryne Schroeder were recognized for their selection on behalf of the State of Iowa for participation in the Iowa Jobs for America’s Graduates Leadership Conference in Washington D.C. Spencer Fillman was featured for his competing in the Dowling Catholic Paradigm speech and debate competition where he ranked sixth for the entire Midwest region.

Mayor Pro Tem Mike Matson gave accolades to the students, recounting their accomplishments and presenting each with a formal certificate of achievement. Congratulations students and thank you for being such positive representatives of your school in the community. Congratulations to Central High’s show choirs for a great start to the 2018 competitive season at North High’s Big Dance competition. Blue Vibes placed second in the Prep Division and captured a spot in the evening finals, beating out two varsity groups. Central Singers, Incorporated, kicked off their 38th year of competition by placing fourth place in class 4-A, earning a spot in the evening finals where they placed third runner-up overall. Special congratulations to Junior Peyton Reese who was named Best Female Soloist for the entire competition.

West High’s Falcon Theatre hosted a 10-Minute Play Festival on January 18th and 19th. All plays were written and directed by West students and hosted by juniors Lily Hancock and Robbie Greve (pictured).
