Then Alfonso Cuaron's wickedly taut little film arrived. Much of the narrative was trimmed down or removed altogether leaving a moderately unsatisfying adaptation, at least on the surface. A few months later, the film came to video, and without the third book as fresh in my head, I re-examined Cuaron's Potter movie with a fresh perspective. He took a few creative liberties with the Potter series, but he also twisted around the narrative, removing the somewhat dull yearly movement of the first two chapters.

Instead of feeling like we're at the school for a whole year, the movie feels more like it takes place during the first few months at Hogwarts (even though that isn't the case), which gives the film a much stronger narrative drive. Even better, the cast is finally fitting well into their characters and growing as performers. With the exception of, who's still a little wooden as, the cast is just terrific. And the story, centering on a mysterious figure named Sirius Black, as well as a time-traveling third act, is both refreshing and incredibly clever.

The strange decision to cast (stepping in for, who died shortly after the second film came out), as a more aloof, hippie-like was also inspired, particularly considering the tasks and revelations Dumbledore must endure later in the series. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban might not have 'wowed' me when it originally hit theaters, but it's continued to be one of my absolute favorite Potter films, easily the best of the formulative years (years 1-4) of the series. It's sharp, snappy and visually inventive, more so than any of the other Potter features. And best of all – it's a ton of fun to watch, and it gets better with each viewing. This latest Blu-ray 'Ultimate Edition' is an elite member of a multi-part rollout of all eight Potter films. The original press release for this series claimed that each film would receive extended cuts, as well as the original theatrical cut.
